4 Advantages of the 2 Day Mobile App

A friend called me a while ago after visiting my blog about our Instant Business App solution on our company’s website, telling us that there are SaaS solutions that do not even require you to spend two days on your app – you can get them instantly. While I do admit that the online app building solutions are more flexible, there are some pitfalls which makes our “two day app” stand out – even in terms of speed:

1- Not everyone is a techie. Sure, the argument here is that no coding is required. But still you must know a minimum of how to organize your buttons, how to offer the features, and what look to apply. You must also keep in mind that there are standards set for each platform, dictating how an app should look. At a minimum, you need consultation from a friend. Otherwise, you could risk being rejected by the app stores.
The thing about the “two day app” is that it requires no customization at all; only some skin and text changes. It is already based on industry best standards, and it has already been approved by the app stores. The user is getting more for their money, not less.

2- One-time payment vs. recurring. SaaS systems typically charge on a monthly basis. That’s how they make their money after all. Over a period of time, your costs can increase beyond what you initially anticipated.
The two day app, on the other hand, is a one-time fixed payment only. There is only an annual fee of $99 and that is because of the Apple App Store price. And let me guess; this price is not even included in the price the SaaS companies charge you.

3- See everything upfront. The “two day app” is already published; uses may download samples of it and play with it. As such, the client knows exactly what they will get in the app. Compare this to a solution where nothing is defined in advance. We have also seen negative comments about the SaaS services, stating that things were not performing the way they were supposed to do. There are no such hidden caveats in our app.

4- Offline capabilities. SaaS and online apps are designed to be online. At the time of this writing, we
are not familiar with any SaaS which supports offline capabilities as well. Offline capabilities are complicated and require good coding to
be applied properly. While this feature is a necessity especially in countries or locations with little or no internet connection, clients in those areas can simply not use those services as this feature is missing.
In the “two day app”, this feature is built-in. The app collects the data anytime it is online, and stores it for usage anytime it is disconnected. The client will never notice the difference.


Naturally I believe our solution is better – otherwise we would not have come up with it ;) I hope this post has clarified this point to you as well that not only is the “two day app” superior in terms of quality – it is really faster to get done too.

How to Turn Your Worst Clients into the Best

The Case

Last year I was working on a website project for a Canadian company. The client came to us
requiring changes and upgrades to the existing code. It seemed that their developer had left the project in the middle. We accepted the project and gathered the work scope in a meeting with the client. But the more we worked on the project, we noticed holes, pitfalls and shortcomings in the existing code and site (I’m sure many developers have experienced this when taking over someone else’s code). The site lacked many admin functionalities, and several parts of the data was only dummy html, just to show something to the client.
We raised all these issues with the client, informing them of all room for improvement there is. The client was happy with the proposed changes - but then, everything got screwed. As soon as we raised the issue of additional funds requested to implement those changes, the client went mad, threatening to completely abandon the project and wanted a full refund for the work done as well! Naturally, many were upset about this behavior on our side, insisting that the client should not only get a refund, but should pay the remaining amounts as well. Things were heating up.

How We Solved This

The most primary issue is not to panic or react negatively to such pressures. So, while our marketing guy was our primary link with the client, I stepped in and issued a very friendly letter to the client. I told him that we could not give him any quote before the scope of work had been determined, and that he may gladly take the job to any other developer but the same problems would exist. And finally, since we were at the beginning of the project applying these changes would be most favorable to the client as applying the same changes on a live system requires a lot more care and precaution, and might even affect the live data and require migration.
The result? We got the job, at the same budget we proposed. And the client was super-pleased, telling our management that he looks forward to work with me again (and no, I had not asked him to do that!). And he came back to us with other jobs.

Lessons Learned

-          We should have told the client about the possibility of increased costs right at the beginning. Most probably we could avoid the whole hassle that way.
-          It’s very important to be calm, and honest. Honesty prevails.
-          We won because our set-off point was really the benefits of our client. Our intention to go the extra mile was primarily to the benefits of our client, more than our company’s benefits. People are fair and do notice these things

The region is mobile; how do you compete?

Based on some research we’ve done, we came to the following conclusions:
-        Smartphones represent 40% of total impressions in the Middle East which is 45% higher than the global average.
-        Smartphone penetration in the Middle East region is continuing to grow up to 40% this year.
-        72% of smartphone owners are less than 34 years old
-        Nearly 80% of shopping found place through smartphones.            
-        Despite the fact that India and China are traditionally considered the most potential smartphone markets, Middle East has actively joined in the race and is becoming the next big market for mobile applications, according to the latest Smartphone research, conducted by Google.
-        Out of 26 countries that participated in Google’s survey, UAE ranked the highest in terms of smartphone penetration in the world, with 62% of mobile phone users reporting that they own smartphones. It’s a staggering 18% growth in just one year! Other countries, like Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Jordan have also experienced an impressive boost in smartphone usage: with KSA market growing from 54.6% to 60% penetration rate, as well as Egypt and Jordan closing up the ranks with up to 50% smartphone penetration rate. Interestingly, over 20% of mobile users in UAE and KSA also own personal tablets, while only 5% of cellular owners have tablets in Jordan.
-        Additionally, more than 90% of smartphone users in the Middle East notice mobile advertising, while surfing the mobile web. Mobile users in Egypt are also among the heaviest social networkers in the world with 91% of smartphone owners doing this, while 48% of smartphone users in the UAE call a business after a local smartphone search.
-        Smartphone applications annual revenue in 2011 totaled over 43 million USD in KSA, UAE and Jordan combined, and expecting to reach over 200 million USD by the year 2015. Arabic language applications are also on the rise, with over 46% of mobile users in Saudi Arabia market preferring Arabic, while browsing their smartphone.
